Digging a Classroom

You must get a wizard's approval for your building plans before you can begin digging your first classroom. Only someone with builder status can create a classroom.

Decide where you want your room to be located and what other room (or hallway) it will be connected to. Go to this location first before digging.

When you are in that adjoining room or hallway, type @dig <direction 1>, <alias>|<opposite direction>, <alias>, out to "<roomname>" to create your room. Aliases are most frequently the letter symbol for the particular direction. For example, if you wanted to create a Women's Literature Classroom in the English Building, you would go to your chosen hallway to which you wanted the room to be connected. You would then type:

@dig east,e|west, w, out to "Women's Literature Classroom"

This creates and names your room, while creating an exit from your current location to the new room, and a return entrance from the new room to your current room. In other words, you've simultaneously performed three actions with that one command. For example, let's assume you've started in a hallway called "The Judith Shakespeare Memorial Hallway," from which you issued that @dig . . . command. You would then have 1) created a new room named the "Women's Literature Classroom; 2) created an entrance east to your new room from the Judith Shakespeare Hallway; and 3) created an exit west from your new room to the Judith Shakespeare Hallway (that also has the aliases "w" and "out"). If you are not the owner of the starting room, you will need to get the owner to use the @add-entrance or @add-exit command to connect your room to his or her room. You can find the owner of the room by typing examine here while standing in the original room. If you create your room off of a public space, such as a hallway, you will need to contact a wizard to have the entrance and exit connected to your new room.

The "out" is a required feature for rooms on DU. All room exits need this alias so that users can type out from any room and eventually reach one of the hallways on DU.
